Why Does My Door Squeak?

21/02/2023

Why does your door make annoying noises when you open and close it? Here are some common reasons:

  • Loose hinges. If your door is making creaking or squeaking noises, it could be due to loose hinges. Try tightening the screws to see if it resolves the issue.
  • Dry or dirty hinges. If the hinges are dry or dirty, it can cause friction and noise. Lubricate the hinges with a silicone-based lubricant to reduce the noise.
  • Misaligned strike plate. If the strike plate is misaligned, it can cause the latch to bind, making a clicking noise. You can adjust the strike plate by loosening the screws and repositioning it so it aligns with the latch.
  • Old or worn-out hardware. If your door is old, the hardware may have become worn out, causing it to make noise. Consider replacing the hinges, latch, or other hardware.
  • Warped door. A door that is warped or not level can cause it to rub against the frame, causing friction and noise. You may need to replace the door or have a professional repair it.
  • High humidity levels. High humidity can cause wood to expand and warp, causing doors to rub against the frame and making noise. Consider installing a dehumidifier in your home to reduce the humidity levels.

In other words, that noise might be ultimately due to a defect in the door itself or its hardware. That defect might have been caused by high humidity levels, constant use or natural deterioration through the years.

If your door and its hardware are still new, it’s likely that the problem lies on the hinges. Tightening or lubricating the hinges can remove the creaking and squeaking. But if the door and hinges are already old (you already see some corrosion and warping), now might be a good time to replace your door and its hardware.

If it’s time for door replacement, you can find several options here (entrance doors, internal doors).
